Gear pumps drive most dump hoists, lift gates and small cranes. They are simple and tough, and when they wear out we rebuild or replace them.
How a gear pump works
A gear pump moves oil by trapping it between the teeth of meshing gears and the housing. Every turn of the shaft moves the same volume, which makes it a fixed displacement pump. External gear pumps use two spur gears side by side; internal gear pumps, including gerotor pumps, run an outer ring gear around an inner gear and handle thicker fluids well. Some units can run as either a pump or a motor.
What wears
Gear faces and tips, the side plates or wear plates, bushings or bearings, and the shaft seal. Wear opens up internal clearances, oil slips back inside the pump, and the equipment slows down, especially once the oil is hot.
